Hi,
What if we told you that in just two years, the passing percentage of class X students in Meghalaya improved from 28% to 92%? Yes, it’s true. And I am excited to share how it happened.
It all began with 20 schools…
In 2022, we introduced smart classrooms under Project Ka Lawei in 20 schools of East Jaintia Hills. The goal? To make learning more joyful, and meaningful and to improve classroom engagement.
By 2023, seeing early progress, we expanded to 30 more schools, covering a total of 166 smart classrooms.
But it wasn’t easy… Right from the start, we faced two big challenges:
- Severe Learning Gaps: Over 90% of the students had learning levels 4–5 grades below their current class.
- Language Barriers: While the Meghalaya curriculum is in English, the English comprehension of both students and teachers was very poor.
So what did we do differently? Found the Right Solutions
Instead of treating Smart Class App on TV as mere content delivery tool, we shifted the focus to bridge foundational gaps. Here’s what we did:
- Strengthening English Comprehension by adding interactive English grammar lessons and storybooks to build vocabulary and comprehension. Slowed down video playback on a smart class app to match the students’ pace of understanding. We also offered visual and transliterated content to ease learning in the multilingual context.
- Further, we also started conducting monthly assessments via tablets of the students aligned with what teachers had covered in the previous month. Our team analysed student-level performance data to identify learning gaps. Based on gaps, we developed Bridge Courses with a set of videos and practice questions of interconnected chapters from junior grades. This to be used by teachers before beginning grade-level content.
The Results?
- In just one year, we saw over 4,300 hours of smart classroom usage, which then grew to 53,000+ hours the very next year.
- Class 10 pass rates jumped from 28% to 60% at the end of year 1, and this year, they’ve improved to an incredible 92%.
It fills me with joy and deep inspiration to hear the excitement in the voices of our teachers and on-ground team as they share these changes. While the project is still ongoing, I remain personally involved and committed to driving it forward with even greater impact.
