How a Desktop-Based Digital Library in Tura, Meghalaya, is Strengthening Schools’ Digital Infrastructure

Tura, the second-largest town in Meghalaya, serves as the educational hub of the Garo Hills Division. Nearly 45 surrounding villages depend on its schools for secondary and senior secondary education. Most institutions follow the Meghalaya Board of School Education curriculum, and literacy levels are high. Conversations in Tuna for the past few years have been gradually shifting toward improving classroom engagement and digital familiarity.

What is inspiring to know is schools in Tura already have access to technology infrastructure. However, what has been missing is access to quality digital learning resources aligned to curriculum.

Recognizing this gap, an education-focused NGO working with schools in Meghalaya collaborated with iDream Education to enhance the existing desktop-based digital library in Tura schools.

What Does the Entire Desktop-Based Digital Library Setup Comprise?

To strengthen the desktop-based library infrastructure in these schools, we enabled a Windows-compatible Learning Management System (LMS) integrated with Meghalaya Board–aligned digital content and reporting tools. This setup allows students and teachers to access structured digital learning materials aligned with their textbooks across multiple content categories, all in one centralized platform. The content is available in both English and Hindi medium, ensuring wider accessibility for learners.

The initiative is implemented in two English-medium Meghalaya Board schools in Tura, serving Classes 6 to 12. Together, these schools cater to 606 students and 27 teachers.

As part of the deployment, the initiative installed a desktop-based Digital Library on 20 Windows computers, with 10 systems in each school. Students use these systems on a rotational basis to regularly access digital learning resources and strengthen their subject understanding through interactive content.

Rolling out the Desktop-Based digital library in Tura required careful planning and coordination, particularly given the region’s hilly terrain and logistical challenges

We were happy to see that co-creating this education program with the NGO team in Tura was both encouraging and impactful.

Throughout the process, the NGO team played an active role in hardware preparation and system configuration. Recognizing that the long-term sustainability of the initiative would depend on local ownership, the NGO asked their internal team to conduct the initial training before teacher onboarding began. This step helped them clearly understand the system configuration protocols and LMS deployment process.

Since the team members were already comfortable using digital devices, they were able to navigate the platform confidently within a single day. Their quick adoption reflected both their adaptability and the platform’s intuitive design. With this familiarity in place, teachers onboarded more smoothly and now resolve day-to-day queries locally without waiting for external technical support.

Alongside the deployment, structured monitoring mechanisms are introduced to track usage trends and identify areas where academic support might be needed. We will continue working closely with the NGO team to monitor, track, and support the regular usage of the desktop-based digital library in Tura.
