Offline Digital Learning Takes Root in Remote Schools Across Arunachal Pradesh
When conversations around digital education happen, they’re often centred on faster internet, cloud-based platforms, and connected classrooms. But in many remote parts of India, the first question isn’t how fast the internet is – it’s whether there will be any connection at all.
In many government schools across Arunachal Pradesh, a teacher’s day begin by checking whether electricity returned overnight and whether it will last through the school day. Mobile networks disappear behind mountain ridges, power supply is unpredictable, and reaching the nearest town with stable connectivity can take hours. In these classrooms, digital education cannot depend on being online. It has to work regardless.
For teachers, these aren’t occasional inconveniences – they shape every school day. A lesson that depends on the digital explanations can quickly come to a halt when the signal drops.
That experience reinforced an important lesson for us: if digital learning is to reach every learner, it must first work in the realities of every classroom. This is why offline-first learning in remote schools is not simply a technical feature. It is the foundation of dependable digital education.
The Reality We Found in Classrooms of Arunachal Pradesh
Through a partnership with a rural development organisation working to improve educational opportunities in underserved communities, we began supporting government schools across Arunachal Pradesh with digital learning.
The enthusiasm to adopt new ways of teaching was already there. Teachers wanted to make lessons more engaging, and students were eager to explore learning beyond textbooks.
The challenge was infrastructure.
In schools where internet connectivity is unreliable, even high-quality digital content becomes difficult to use if it depends on being online. Alongside this was another equally important consideration. Introducing technology into classrooms is not only about providing devices and content. Teachers also need the confidence and ongoing support to integrate digital resources naturally into their teaching.
Hence, rather than building solutions around ideal conditions, we built around the conditions teachers experience every day.
The smart classroom solution is equipped with an offline-enabled Learning Management System (LMS) and curriculum-aligned offline digital learning content. This ensures teachers can access lessons and learning resources without relying on a live internet connection, allowing classroom instruction to continue regardless of network availability.
With easy access to syllabus-aligned videos, explanations and practice resources, teachers are able to actively integrate digital content into their everyday classroom instruction. Instead of using technology only when connectivity is available, digital learning became a consistent part of teaching and learning.
For many students, this also meant experiencing classroom learning in a more engaging way. Visual explanations and interactive digital content complemented textbook learning, helping make concepts easier to understand while remaining closely aligned with the school curriculum.
What Early Usage Told Us
The programme’s first phase reached 10 government schools.
Across these schools, 10 registered users completed 128 digital learning sessions, recording nearly five hours of digital learning engagement.
Rather than measuring success only by scale, these early numbers demonstrate something equally valuable: reliability. When technology works consistently in challenging environments, teachers are more likely to return to it, and students have more opportunities to benefit from engaging learning experiences.
What This Experience Reinforced for Us
Working in remote schools across Arunachal Pradesh reinforced a simple but important principle.
Digital education cannot rely on assumptions about infrastructure. It has to reflect the realities of the classrooms it is meant to serve.
The future of digital education will certainly include better connectivity. But until every classroom can depend on that reality, dependable learning must not depend on being online.
