Smart Classes in Kolar, Karnataka: Strengthening Everyday Teaching in Government Schools

Kolar district is not new to education reform. Over the past few years, the district has actively embraced digital literacy, STEM exposure, foundational learning improvement, and infrastructure upgradation largely through strong public-private partnerships and CSR collaborations.
From STEM lab expansions to the strengthening of innovation ecosystems through Atal Innovation Mission’s Atal Tinkering Labs across Karnataka, including Kolar, the district has been steadily building opportunities for hands-on, inquiry-based learning. Digital classrooms Initiatives have further reinforced the district’s commitment to improving both access and quality within government schools.
To further strengthen everyday teaching in government schools, a philanthropic arm of one of India’s largest electronics retail chains partnered with iDream Education to implement Smart Classes in Kolar’s government schools.
The objective of their CSR-led education initiative is not to introduce smart classes as a standalone intervention. Instead, it aims to integrate a complete smart class ecosystem that includes an LMS, digital content, and reporting. STEM labs may inspire curiosity. Infrastructure may improve access. However, consistent academic support inside the classroom ultimately strengthens learning outcomes.
Implementation Delivers: 50 Smart Class Setups Across 41 Government Schools in Kolar

Under this initiative, the project established 50 Smart Classrooms across 41 government schools in Kolar district. The allocation was strategically planned based on student strength and school size. Some schools received one Smart Classroom, others received two, and larger schools received up to three classrooms to ensure equitable access and effective utilization.
Each Smart Classroom features a 65-inch Interactive Flat Panel with a preinstalled smart class LMS & offline Karnataka State Board–aligned smart class content for Classes 1 to 10 in both Kannada and English mediums. This ensures uninterrupted access to curriculum-mapped, multi-category digital resources, including animated videos, practice questions, assessments, and a lot more – directly aligned to textbook lessons.
Importantly, the initiative does not alter how lessons are delivered; it strengthens them. Teachers continue teaching in the language they are comfortable with, while now having access to bilingual digital content that enhances clarity, structure, and engagement. Lesson planning becomes simpler, classroom instruction more visual, and student interaction more participative, without disrupting existing academic flow.
Through this implementation, over 3,500 students & more than 100 gained access to structured digital learning support.
Training and Baseline Assessments Begin with Strong Participation
The rollout began with strong participation from both teachers and students, reflecting a genuine openness toward integrating digital learning into everyday classrooms.
Training teams organised the sessions in guided phases to gradually build teacher familiarity and ensure confidence at every step. In the first phase, conducted cluster-level sessions where they introduced teachers to iPrep, digital content, and assessment integration. During these sessions, trainers explained how the Smart Class LMS and digital content align with Karnataka State Board textbooks. And also show how teachers can meaningfully integrate these resources into existing lesson plans.
This was followed by school-level, hands-on sessions. Here, teachers practiced integrating digital resources into their own classroom schedules, lesson planning, using practice for student interaction, and more practical usage scenarios. The initiative did not seek to change how teachers teach, but to strengthen lesson delivery through structured digital support.
