Implementation of Smart Classes in Tamil Nadu Board Government Schools

Under a large NGO-led education initiative aimed at strengthening everyday classroom teaching and improving access to curriculum-aligned digital learning, smart classes were implemented in Tamil Nadu Board government schools in collaboration with iDream Education.

A total of 46 government Tamil-medium schools across the districts of Cuddalore, Vridhachalam, and Chidambaram were identified by the District Education Office for digital classroom support. These schools are widely spread across rural and semi-rural geographies, where reaching campuses often involves long highway travel followed by navigation through interior village roads.

Most of these schools operate with limited teaching-learning resources. The implementation of smart classes in Tamil Nadu schools was designed to bridge this gap by enabling structured, curriculum-aligned digital content, interactive learning tools, and classroom technology support.

On-Ground Training & Smart Class Enablement Across Rural School Locations

Conducting training sessions across schools spread through the rural parts of Cuddalore, Vridhachalam, and Chidambaram was one of the most complex, yet most meaningful parts of the implementation journey. To cover all locations within a limited timeline, the project team divided into five smaller field groups, each following different routes daily. Travel typically involved long road journeys, followed by navigating interior village roads to reach individual school campuses. Also, with careful planning and tight coordination, every school received its smart classroom setup and teacher training as scheduled.

What made the effort especially rewarding was the response at the school level. In several villages, students were seeing a large digital interactive panel for the very first time. Teachers demonstrated digital lessons the moment attention levels shifted instantly. Then these classrooms became more focused, more curious, and more participative. The excitement among students on seeing smart classrooms in action was clearly visible and deeply encouraging for the team.

During the initial teacher training sessions, language emerged as a practical challenge. Most teachers were fluent in Tamil, which led to hesitation at first. A local NGO coordinator effectively addressed this gap. With this support, the full training session translation helped teachers feel comfortable and confident. As the sessions progressed, teachers actively came forward, practiced navigating the LMS, operated the panel, and explored the digital content themselves — turning hesitation into hands-on adoption.

Across these villages, the integration of Smart Classes in Tamil Nadu government schools has been steady and practical. What started as a classroom upgrade is now slowly becoming part of regular teaching routines. Finally, we look forward to usage and outcomes in the coming months.
