Smart Classroom in Matlong, Jharkhand: Bringing Digital Learning to the Last Mile Learners

Bringing access and equity to learning opportunities for last-mile learners is what truly defines the spirit of meaningful education initiatives. But an important question remains – are these efforts genuinely reaching the most remote classrooms where they are needed the most?

Our recent Smart Classroom implementation in Matlong, Jharkhand, stands as a powerful example of what it takes to bridge this gap. Located nearly 40–45 kilometres away from the main district, reaching Matlong is not straightforward – it involves navigating multiple modes of transport, reflecting just how distant many schools still are from consistent infrastructure and quality learning resources.

Yet, the moment you step into the school, a different reality unfolds, similar to what happened in the school of Matlong, Jharkhand

The school serves as a central learning hub for the region, with students travelling daily from eight nearby villages, most of them belonging to families whose primary livelihoods are labor and farming. This made the school more than just a local institution; it is a shared space of aspiration and opportunities for last-mile learners.

The school has a small team of nine teachers, including the principal, who manage classes across multiple grades and subjects each day. It is in such contexts that the true impact of digital interventions such as Smart Classrooms begins to take shape – strengthening access, improving quality, and enabling continuity in learning.

Let’s look at the details of our recent implementation of Smart Classroom in Matlong

Experiential teacher training on using an interactive smart class and smart classroom LMS in a Matlong school of Jharkhand

To support classroom teaching in such a remote environment, an NGO working in education collaborated with iDream Education to introduce a Smart Classroom in Matlong village.

As part of this initiative, the school received a 65-inch Samsung Interactive Flat Panel integrated with a Learning Management System & offline Jharkhand Board–aligned digital content for Classes 1 to 12 in Hindi and English medium.

Enabled smart classroom setup is designed specifically for remote school environments. The availability of offline content eliminated the need for continuous internet connectivity. At the same time, all content in a structured, easy-to-navigate format across multiple categories on iPrep LMS is making it possible for teachers to use smart classes just after one time training.

With this setup in place, teachers now have an additional instructional tool to support classroom teaching for nearly 850 students from surrounding villages.

How We Introduced Teachers to Smart Classroom for Effective Daily Classroom Use

All available teachers participated in the session, along with the principal, two guest teachers, and members of the NGO support team who facilitated the process. The NGO team members also remained actively involved throughout the training, and the Panchayat highly appreciated the setup for strengthening the school’s infrastructure and enhancing the overall learning environment.

As the smart class training session began, there was visible hesitation among teachers. For many, this was their first time engaging with digital devices for teaching.

What immediately sparked their interest, however, was the availability of digital content that closely aligned with their textbooks. Equally reassuring was the fact that the content could be accessed offline, addressing a key concern in areas with limited internet connectivity.

To build confidence and ensure regular usage, our team started with a structured onboarding, followed by experiential training. The training sessions guided teachers through the platform and its multimedia resources, along with practical ways to integrate them into daily classroom teaching, such as:

  • Conducting interactive quizzes using practice questions
  • Using animated videos for concept explanation
  • Enabling guided reading sessions through digital books
  • Supporting structured revision before exams with notes

A particularly inspiring moment was seeing the principal actively participate, motivating teachers across subjects, and demonstrating how to use smart class content effectively in everyday lessons, which made the moment particularly inspiring.

We now look forward to consistent usage and meaningful learning outcomes emerging from the school.
