Smart Classroom in Sitamarhi, Bihar: How Smart Classes Are Reaching Where Basic Infrastructure Never Did

Experiential teacher training session on using smart class in Bihar school

There are many places in India where digital learning is discussed in policy rooms and urban seminars. And then there are also some places where the word “digital” has never truly entered a classroom.

One such place is Sitamarhi district, located nearly 15–20 kilometres from the Nepal border. These rural government schools operate in a belt where agriculture defines life and infrastructure remains limited. When we arrived there for the smart class implementation, we discovered that teachers had no prior exposure to structured digital learning tools – no smart screens, no organized LMS platforms – only blackboards, notebooks, and their own relentless effort.

This Smart Class Implementation in Sitamarhi Enabled Through an Education-Focused NGO Collaboration

Experiential teacher training session on smart class LMS and digital content for Bihar Board schools in Sitamarhi

This initiative covered five government schools with a clear purpose to introduce structured, syllabus-aligned digital content that fits seamlessly into everyday classroom teaching. In a region where such systems had never existed, the focus was not just on introducing technology, but on making it truly usable and relevant for teachers and students. The entire setup was thoughtfully designed to work within existing classroom conditions rather than requiring new ones.

Each classroom receives a TV-based display system, which is complete with end-to-end setup, ensuring ease of use for teachers. To address inconsistent electricity, the solar system integration setup also provided . Plus, the smart class setup is aligning with the regular classroom teaching, supporting both Hindi and English medium instruction across Classes 1 to 8, aligned to Bihar Board-aligned digital content. The smart class setup in Sitamarhi is completely offline.

The moment that truly defined this implementation came during the first training session

At the beginning of the session, a teacher raised a simple and honest question: “Sir, is this device for YouTube usage?”

That question revealed more than curiosity. It reflected unfamiliarity with structured academic digital systems and limited prior exposure to classroom aligned educational technology. They never thought something like this existed.

As the demonstration began, teachers saw textbook-aligned content come alive on screen through animated videos and interactive practice and felt delighted. What stood out even more was the ease of access – there was no need to search extensively. They could simply select their class, subject, and chapter, and navigate through the content in the way that suited them best.

With continued guidance and reassurance, the initial hesitation gradually gave way to comfort. During hands-on practice, teachers started exploring the platform more confidently – trying out lessons and navigating the system on their own.

By the end of the session, this shift was clearly visible. Teachers were independently accessing lessons and recognizing how visual explanations could simplify their teaching and reduce preparation time. The screen no longer remained just a device; it began to function as a reliable teaching support tool.

In places such as Sitamarhi, where digital learning has never been part of classroom experience, even the first step can create a visible shift & further adoption.
