Bringing Smart Classrooms to Uttarakhand Schools: A Step Toward Digital Learning for All

Teacher and students showcasing a smart classroom in Uttarakhand school.

Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand is known for its mountainous terrain and scattered rural settlements. Many government schools in these hill regions function with limited infrastructure, difficult accessibility, and frequent electricity challenges. In such environments, introducing classroom technology often feels difficult and uncertain. But solutions succeed when designed specifically for rural realities rather than urban assumptions.

What these schools truly need is not complex infrastructure, but a dependable, easy-to-use, and offline-ready digital learning setup that works within existing constraints. Keeping this need at the center, a well-known CSR company collaborated with iDream Education to bring smart classrooms to government schools across Uttarakhand. The goal was simple and practical: enable technology-supported teaching and learning through solutions that are quick to deploy, simple to operate, and ready to use without continuous internet dependence.

These smart classrooms are helping strengthen digital learning access for students in remote hill regions while supporting teachers with structured, curriculum-aligned digital content and tools.

Let us now look at the implementation details and how the initiative was carried out across schools.

Under this initiative, smart classroom infrastructure was implemented in two government primary schools in Rudraprayag district. The schools are Primary School Basti in Tehsil Basukedar and Primary School Falai near Augustmuni. Both schools serve young learners from remote hill communities, which traditionally limit young learners’ access to quality digital resources.

Each school was equipped with a 65-inch BenQ Interactive Flat Panel (IFP), preinstalled LMS, and offline Hindi-medium digital content aligned with the Uttarakhand Board for Classes 1 to 5.

Considering the frequent electricity disruptions common in hilly regions, the implementation also included a complete solar power backup system. This setup comprises a solar module, inverter, and battery support. This is to ensure that digital lessons can continue even during power cuts, making the smart classrooms reliable for daily use.

With this approach, two fully functional smart classrooms were established. These classrooms collectively support around 40 students, enabling three teachers to conduct regular digital lessons. The overall design focused on practicality, ease of use, and suitability for everyday teaching conditions in rural hill schools.

Smart Class Training Session in Remote Hill Schools of Uttarakhand

Teacher teaching through animated video content on IFP-based smart classroom setup in school.

Implementing smart classrooms in remote hill regions is only effective when teachers feel confident using the setup in their daily teaching. With this belief, our team conducted on-site, hands-on training sessions in both schools despite the difficult terrain and travel constraints.

Reaching Primary School Basti required traveling nearly 40 km through steep hill roads, with no public transport available for the final stretch. Similarly, although Primary School Falai is located about 8 km from Augustmuni, the narrow and challenging terrain made the journey equally demanding. Still, the team ensured that in-person training was delivered so teachers could comfortably adopt the digital tools.

A focused smart class training session was conducted practically for three teachers. The sessions included:

  • Operating the BenQ Interactive Flat Panel
  • Accessing and navigating the offline digital content
  • Switching classes and subjects easily
  • Understanding different content categories and lesson types
  • Using specific content formats effectively during daily teaching

Teachers actively participated and explored the platform features with real classroom scenarios. The teacher at Falai, in particular, showed strong interest in integrating the tools into regular lessons. They also appreciated the availability of offline Hindi-medium content aligned with their teaching needs and local context.

With installation and training now completed, these schools in Rudraprayag have begun their journey with the Smart Classroom setup.

The real impact will unfold through regular classroom usage, which we will continuously track through our reporting dashboard. These insights will be regularly shared with teachers to help strengthen adoption and effective use. From this CSR project partner, enable data-driven decisions and keep all stakeholders well-informed about the project’s progress.
