From Royal Palace to Digital Classroom: Smart Classes in Itawa Bhopji School, Jaipur

In Rajasthan, history is not confined to museums, it lives within the architecture of everyday spaces. This was vividly experienced during the implementation of smart classrooms in Itawa Bhopji, in Jaipur district. The Government Higher Secondary School here stands within what was once a royal palace. Courtyards that once welcomed dignitaries now host morning assemblies of a school, and rooms that once echoed with royal conversations today function as classrooms filled with young learners. Witnessing education unfold in such a historically rich setting was both remarkable and deeply inspiring.

Adding a new chapter to this legacy,

Smart class in Itawa Bhopji School is an initiative by an education-focused NGO in collaboration with iDream Education. The objective was to strengthen teaching practices across grades. Just as the campus preserves its history and culture within these walls, it now brings digital learning into its classrooms.

The school welcomed the smart classroom setup with a ceremonial inauguration as a formal function attended by state authorities and local education representatives. For students and teachers alike, the moment symbolized more than the introduction of technology. It marked the beginning of a new academic phase where modern digital tools strengthen traditional learning spaces.

Under this initiative, 2 smart classes are set up at Rajkiya Higher Secondary School in Itawa Bhopji, Jaipur

The setup supports learning for students from Classes 1 to 12. All the smart class content aligns with the Rajasthan State Board curriculum, enabling teachers to integrate digital tools into their regular classroom instruction. Both smart classrooms in Itawa Bhopji operate with a BenQ interactive panel integrated with a pre-installed Learning Management System (LMS) and offline smart class content in both Hindi and English.

The smart classroom setup now supports over 350 students and more than 12 teachers in the school. With the infrastructure successfully installed, the focus has gradually shifted from implementation to regular academic use, enabling teachers to integrate digital learning resources into their day-to-day teaching practices.

Experiential Teacher Training to Enable Regular Smart Class Usage

Once the smart classrooms became operational, our focus was to ensure teachers feel confident using them during regular teaching periods. To support this, soon after the setup, an experiential teacher training session helped teachers understand how to integrate the system into regular classroom teaching rather than use it only as a technical tool.

It was inspiring to see teachers gathering around the interactive panel and quickly moving from observation to active participation during the training session. They operated the panel and smart class content themselves, navigated through grade-specific modules, and explored how digital content could reinforce concepts they already covered in their textbooks. The discussions during training largely focused on using smart class content for lesson planning of different grades.

As part of the initiative, the program conducted baseline assessments to understand the existing learning levels of 122 students across grades. The results highlighted learning gaps across several classes. For example, Class 6 showed 36% beginners in English and up to 80% beginners in Mathematics, while around 33% of students in Class 9 were at the beginner level.

These insights now help teachers use Smart Class explanations and practice modules on topics where students require the most support. This baseline, therefore, becomes a starting point for measuring progress, and with a planned endline assessment at the end of the academic year, the school will be able to clearly observe how learning improves over time.
