Nestled deep within the hills of Meghalaya, East Jaintia Hills is a district where coal mining has long been the primary livelihood. Many people never saw education as a pathway to prosperity. Most families had not seen what lies beyond the coal mines, and hence, pulling children out of school was often an easy choice. In this backdrop, the average pass percentage for Class 10 was a mere 28%. But in just two years, that number soared to 92%. A key driver of success was the smart class app with preloaded, syllabus-aligned content in multiple formats—animated lessons, interactive videos, practice questions, and assessments—all available offline. This ensured teachers could confidently use the content without the barriers of internet dependency or technical complexity. Its intuitive design made daily classroom integration natural, supporting adoption even in remote regions.

The Challenge

In 2022, the District Office of East Jaintia Hills partnered with us with a bold mandate — to improve learning outcomes with limited budgets using digital tools. In the first phase, 20 government schools were selected for the deployment of Smart TV with a Smart Class App. These devices were set up pre-installed with the iPrep Smart Class App and preloaded with MBOSE aligned digital content. The goal was to provide offline access to quality learning resources in regions with limited internet connectivity, and to enhance classroom instruction and student engagement.

Yet, the initial rollout of the Smart Class App surfaced two major challenges:

  1. Severe Learning Gaps: Over 90% of the students had learning levels 4–5 grades below their current class.
  2. Language Barriers: While the Meghalaya curriculum is in English, the English comprehension of both students and teachers was very poor.

Finding the Right Solutions

Instead of treating Smart Class App on TV as mere content delivery tools, we shifted the focus to bridge foundational gaps. Here’s what we did:

Strengthening English Comprehension

  • Added interactive English grammar lessons and storybooks to build vocabulary and comprehension.
  • Slowed down video playback on a smart class app to match the students’ pace of understanding.
  • Offered visual and transliterated content to ease learning in the multilingual context.

Personalised Learning Assessments

  • Started conducting monthly assessments via tablets aligned with what teachers had covered in the previous month
  • Analysed student-level performance data to identify learning gaps.
  • Developed Bridge Courses with a set of videos and practice questions from junior grades. This to be used by teachers before beginning grade-level content. The process initially existed in sheet format and was subsequently integrated into the iPrep Smart Class App.

From Pilot to District-Wide Impact: Expanding the Impact of Smart Class App and Assessments

Encouraged by the promising results from the initial phase, the East Jaintia Hills district soon expanded to over 160 classrooms. This amplifyied the reach and potential of the iPrep Smart Class App.

This scale-up wasn’t just about increasing numbers, it was a strategic decision rooted in the evidence of progress. In the 1st year, the Smart Class app recorded over 4,300 hours of usage. This indicated a normal adoption by both teachers and students. To support this momentum, strategic interventions such as monthly progress tracking and regular feedback loops with teachers were introduced. These efforts led to noticeable improvements in classroom instruction. This further contributed to a significant rise in Class 10 pass rates from 28% to 60% in the academic year 2023–24.

Alongside digital content, the use of offline assessments enabled teachers to continuously monitor learning outcomes, tailor instruction, and build student confidence. Together, smart class app content and assessment created a more responsive, data-informed learning environment across the district.

We knew scale needed sustainability. So we:

  • Identified high-performing schools and trained their teachers as Master Trainers.
  • These Master Trainers conducted peer-to-peer training, inspiring others with their success stories.
  • As a result, classroom usage jumped from 4,300 to over 53,000 hours in the academic year 2024–25, demonstrating the significant improvements in conceptual understanding and exam preparedness.

This year, the passing percentage for class 10 pass rates increased from  60%  to 92 %.

A Community-Led Success

This wasn’t just a story of technology, it was a story of collaboration and integration of right intervention. Teachers were never treated as passive users but as co-creators of change.

  • By giving them data insights, ready-made bridge resources, and easy-to-use digital tools, we saved their time and made them feel empowered.
  • With lower pressure and higher support, they took the lead in driving change.

Closing Thoughts

The journey from a 28% to 92% Class 10 pass rate in just two years is a powerful testimony to what’s possible when the right technology meets the right intent. At the heart of this transformation was a well-integrated smart class solution—smart class hardware paired seamlessly with a purpose-built smart class app, curriculum-aligned digital content, and ongoing assessments. Together, these elements created an engaging and consistent learning environment that improved both conceptual understanding and exam readiness.
