SCERT curricula for lower grades (typically up to Grade 8) differ, with state-specific content that reflects local culture, language, and regional priorities.

Language of instruction and regional focus vary greatly; for instance, Tamil Nadu emphasizes Tamil in its curriculum, while West Bengal includes a strong emphasis on Bengali literature and history.

Thus, while higher grades tend to follow the NCERT syllabus for uniformity, state boards retain regional identity and context in their SCERT-driven curricula for younger students.

In alignment with NEP, the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) is currently revising school textbooks and curriculum. The main aim is to promote Foundational literacy and numeracy, critical thinking, Integrated subjects and experiential learning Therefore NCERT has made changes in Grades 3 and 6 in 2024-25. New textbooks for Grades 4,5, 7 and 8 are also scheduled for release in the 2025-26 academic year.
