In an era defined by technological advancements and integration, central and state governments are taking significant steps to enhance the learning experience and ensure education remains relevant and engaging. One of such steps is the launch of Operation Digital Board (ODB) by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in 2019. This ambitious program aims to leverage technology to elevate the quality of education across the country.

What is the purpose of Operation Digital Board?

The Minister of Human Resource Development, announced the rollout of Operation Digital Board (ODB) in all government and government-aided schools from class 9th onwards, including higher education institutions. Starting from the 2019 academic session, ODB is transforming traditional classrooms into blended digital learning environments.

How does ODB aim to improve education in India?

This initiative goes beyond simply providing e-resources anytime, anywhere as it is focused on leveraging personalized adaptive learning and intelligent tutoring, to realize the potential of emerging technologies such as Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Analytics. To ensure optimum configuration, the ministry has an expert committee for the Digital Class Rooms under ODB.

MHRD minister’s thoughts on the operation digital board.

Operation Digital Board is a revolutionary step which will make the learning as well as the teaching process interactive and popularize flipped learning as a pedagogical approach

 – said Shri Prakash Javadekar Ji

Shri Javadekar Ji in his address further highlighted that,

The launch of initiatives such as e-Pathshala, DIKSHA, NROER, NPTEL, e-PGPathshala, SWAYAM, and SWAYAM-Prabha DTH Channels by the MHRD has made high-quality educational content accessible to every classroom. These resources facilitate blended and flipped classroom learning, significantly enhancing teaching standards regardless of the location of schools and colleges. Moreover, this technology-enabled approach can inspire teachers nationwide to enhance their own teaching practices.

How is ODB implemented?

  • The UGC implemented the ODB initiative in Higher Education Institutions, aiming to extend digital education to all classrooms in India by 2022, starting with 300 universities and 10,000 colleges, covering 200,000 classrooms in the first phase.
  • Digital/SMART boards are provided in all Government and Government-aided Secondary and Sr. Secondary schools, covering approximately 150,000 schools in collaboration with States and UTs.
  • Ensuring availability of e-resources/ e-learning content which could be online/offline but accessible at any time and at any place to students

With the ODB in place, the Union Minister said ensuring quality education across India is a paramount challenge.
