Strengthening Classroom Teaching Through Digital Learning in Government Schools of Haliyal
To strengthen classroom teaching and make concept-based learning more accessible, Indian Foundation, the CSR arm of a multinational engineering and technology company, collaborated with iDream Education to introduce smart class across 10 government schools in Haliyal, Uttara Kannada.
The programme was designed in response to a common classroom challenge.
- Teachers, particularly in Science and Mathematics, often found it difficult to explain abstract concepts due to limited access to laboratory infrastructure, teaching aids, and visual learning resources.
- Frequent power fluctuations and the rural context further reinforced the need for a reliable digital solution that could function without continuous internet connectivity.
The partnership brought together Indian Foundation, which supported the initiative through its CSR programme, and iDream Education, which led the implementation by deploying smart class solution in participating schools.
Each school was equipped with a Samsung Smart TV preloaded with bilingual (Kannada and English) digital learning content aligned to the DSERT curriculum for Grades 1–10. Designed as an offline-first solution, smart classes enabled teachers to access curriculum-aligned videos, simulations, practice resources, and other multimedia content without depending on internet availability. This ensured uninterrupted classroom teaching even in areas with connectivity challenges.
Implementation extended beyond hardware installation and Content Enablement.
iDream Education conducted onsite teacher training sessions to familiarize educators with the platform and demonstrate how digital resources could be integrated into daily lesson plans. Regular implementation support and follow-up visits helped teachers build confidence, troubleshoot challenges, and gradually incorporate digital content into routine classroom instruction.
As the academic year progressed, teachers increasingly used the platform to make lessons more visual, interactive, and engaging. Digital resources were used to simplify difficult concepts, demonstrate scientific processes, and enrich classroom discussions, particularly in subjects where visual explanation plays an important role. Rather than replacing traditional teaching, the technology complemented existing pedagogical practices and supported teachers in delivering curriculum more effectively.
The implementation reflected consistent adoption across participating schools.
Over the academic year, the programme recorded 789.7 hours of classroom usage across 221 active days. Platform utilization increased by 75% compared to the previous year, while average teacher engagement nearly tripled, indicating growing familiarity with the solution and sustained integration into everyday teaching practices.
Going forward, the focus will remain on strengthening classroom adoption through continued implementation support, encouraging deeper integration of digital content into teaching practices, and enabling schools to maximize the potential of technology-enabled learning for improved classroom experiences.
