Strengthening Digital Learning in Rural Karnataka Through Smart Classrooms

Across many government schools in rural Karnataka, teachers are committed to helping every learner succeed, often while working with limited access to digital learning resources. In Davangere district, this created an opportunity to strengthen classroom teaching by making high-quality, curriculum-aligned digital content more accessible. To support this need, a leading non-profit organisation dedicated to rural development and community empowerment partnered with iDream Education to introduce Smart Classrooms across government schools, enabling teachers to enrich everyday learning experiences with technology.

The partnership brought together organisations with a shared commitment to improving learning opportunities for children in rural communities.

While the non-profit organisation led the initiative as part of its broader work in community development, iDream Education supported the implementation by providing its Smart Classroom solution, including digital infrastructure and Karnataka State Board-aligned learning content designed for classroom use.

The programme focused on establishing Smart Classroom infrastructure that could be integrated into regular teaching rather than used as a standalone resource. Students gained access to multimedia lessons covering curriculum topics, while teachers were equipped with digital content that complemented their existing lesson plans. By combining classroom instruction with videos and interactive learning materials, the programme aimed to make concepts easier to explain and understand.

Implementation was carried out in close collaboration with participating schools to ensure the technology became part of everyday classroom practice. The Smart Classroom solution was installed in schools, with curriculum-aligned digital content made readily available for teachers to access during lessons. Throughout the academic year, teachers incorporated these resources into classroom instruction across different subjects, helping create learning experiences that were more visual, interactive and connected to the curriculum.

Preparing teachers was an important part of the implementation process.

Teachers were introduced to the Smart Classroom solution and supported in using digital content alongside their existing teaching practices. Rather than replacing traditional instruction, the programme enabled teachers to strengthen classroom delivery through multimedia resources that supported concept explanation and learner engagement. This practical approach helped teachers integrate technology into their daily routines with confidence.

Within days of implementation, schools demonstrated consistent use of the Smart Classroom solution.

Over the course of the academic year, more than 3,100 learning sessions were conducted, resulting in over 102 hours of digital learning. Students explored 152 unique curriculum topics through nearly 3,000 video lessons, reflecting regular use of curriculum-aligned digital content within classrooms. Teachers consistently incorporated these resources into their lessons, creating classroom environments where learners were encouraged to participate actively while engaging with visual explanations that supported conceptual understanding.

The experience in Davangere highlights the value of combining technology with classroom teaching in ways that support teachers and respond to local learning needs. As schools continue using the Smart Classroom solution, the focus remains on enabling teachers with practical digital tools and ensuring students have continued access to quality educational resources aligned with the Karnataka State Board curriculum. Together, this partnership is strengthening the foundations for more engaging, inclusive and effective classroom learning across rural government schools.
