Large-Scale Implementation of Digital Library with PAL: Closing Historical Learning Gaps

With the objective of helping students address historical learning gaps and progress towards grade-level competencies, a large-scale digital learning intervention was implemented across 14 schools, benefiting over 5,000 students from Classes 1-8. The iPrep Digital Library with PAL is deployed. It comprises 590 tablets housed in 14 storage and charging racks, with each device preloaded with Offline PAL and Non-PAL LMS platforms. Students gained access to curriculum-aligned digital content in English and regional languages, enabling inclusive, self-paced, and personalized learning experiences. Designed as part of one of India’s largest CSR-led education initiatives, the implementation ensured that students could continue learning effectively regardless of connectivity constraints.

Over the academic year, the intervention demonstrated the power of consistent engagement with Personalized Adaptive Learning (PAL) in bridging learning deficits. Students recorded an average improvement of 30–35% across subjects between diagnostic and final assessments, with many progressing from beginner and intermediate levels to higher competencies. Hundreds of learners who initially performed below grade level achieved grade-level proficiency by the end of the year. For example, in Science, the number of grade-level students increased from just 8 at baseline to 464. Positive outcomes were consistently observed across Classes 6, 7, and 8 and across subjects, underscoring PAL’s effectiveness irrespective of starting levels. Month-on-month usage data further established a strong correlation between sustained engagement and improved learning outcomes, highlighting how personalized learning can systematically close historical learning gaps at scale.
