Smart Classes and PAL Labs Creating Joyful Multi-Grade Learning Setup for Children of Migrant Workers
To strengthen learning continuity for children of migrant construction workers in Gurugram, Haryana, a large-scale foundation working towards improving learning for children of migrant families established a technology-enabled learning ecosystem across 9 learning centres. These centres provide educational, health, and nutritional support to children who often experience severe disruptions in schooling due to frequent migration. As a result, most learners arrive with significant historical learning gaps, making age-appropriate school enrolment and retention a persistent challenge. To address this, the large scale foundation implemented iPrep Smart Classes and PAL Labs comprising 10 tablets each, housed in charging and storage racks, creating an engaging and structured learning environment for multi-grade, multi-level learners.

The integrated multi-grade learning environment enabled facilitators to seamlessly manage diverse classrooms. Through Smart Classrooms, facilitators could collectively engage groups of children using curriculum-aligned animated lessons, while simultaneously assigning PAL tablets to other students to continue learning independently at their own pace. This approach changed the centres into vibrant learning spaces where teaching and self-learning could happen together. The availability of bilingual digital content, videos, and adaptive practice modules made it easier for facilitators to support learners with varied abilities and learning levels.

The impact has been particularly visible in bridging foundational gaps. Students have proactively revisited concepts from as early as Class 2, especially in subjects like Mathematics, Science, and English Grammar, demonstrating strong ownership of their learning journeys. Video lessons and practice modules emerged as the most frequently used resources, helping children strengthen concepts and build confidence. With joyful learning experiences through Smart Classes and PAL solution, learning at the centres has become more continuous and effective, enabling children to gradually overcome historical learning gaps and progress towards successful school enrolment and mainstream education.
This initiative is part of the foundation’s larger vision of enabling equitable learning opportunities at scale.

Beyond the learning centres, the foundation has also extended its digital learning initiatives to schools across Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, where Smart Classes/Primebook-based Digital Libraries equipped with curriculum-aligned content have been implemented to strengthen classroom teaching and improve access to quality learning resources at scale.
