The lack of teachers is a concern for government schools in India, including Varanasi. The team at SSK NGO has been proactively engaging with teachers and students in these schools and has discovered that students are skipping classes and losing interest in learning. This is due to the low teacher-to-student ratio, with only 5 to 6 teachers for hundreds of students. As a result, teachers primarily focus on completing the curriculum and, thus, are unable to personalize their teaching, leading to higher absenteeism and decreasing student engagement.
This is when we, in partnership with SSK NGO, implemented an Android Projector-Based Smart Class setup in 11 government schools in Varanasi. It was a projector setup with a Pendrive plugged in with offline digital content aligned to UP Board for classes 1st to 8th in Hindi Medium. To make learning interesting and holistic, we also gave them access to DIY activity videos, a comprehensive digital book library with thousands of books on inspirational biographies, stories, and life skills videos on health, hygiene, safety, sanitation, and so much more.
Enjoyable digital content in a smart class setup led to curiosity among students, resulting in an increased willingness to come to school with the motivation to watch video lessons and other digital content. At the same time, curriculum-aligned digital content reduced the pressure on teachers to complete the course because now they have to play self-explanatory video lessons, resulting in an improved conceptual understanding of each topic and time management.
