The Ministry of Education has launched the SWAYAM Plus portal, an upgraded version of the Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) portal. It was launched by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on February 27, 2024. The SWAYAM Plus portal is poised to make college graduates more job-ready and competitive in the evolving job market. IIT Madras, among the founder institutions of SWAYAM-NPTEL, will be managing the platform

The initiative involves collaborative course development with industry giants such as L&T, Microsoft, and CISCO. The SWAYAM Plus portal seeks to bolster the employability of college students and create lifelong learners through a blend of academic rigour and industry relevance. Programmes on the portal will span diverse sectors. These include manufacturing, energy, computer science, engineering, IT, management studies, healthcare, hospitality, tourism, and Indian knowledge systems.

By offering accredited courses developed in collaboration with esteemed industrial partners, the portal aims to equip students with practical skills and knowledge aligned with industry demands. Notable features of the SWAYAM Plus portal include multilingual content, an AI-enabled chatbot for student assistance, and credit recognition mechanisms.

What is the SWAYAM Portal launched in 2017?

SWAYAM, India’s indigenous MOOC platform, was established by the Government of India on July 9, 2017, with the primary aim of upholding- access, equity, and quality of education in the country. The portal sought to bridge the digital divide by providing high-quality educational resources to all learners, including the most disadvantaged, thus enabling their participation in the knowledge economy. The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) have contributed various online courses to the SWAYAM portal.

The SWAYAM portal offers a wide array of courses spanning from Class 9 to post graduation, catering to learners, educators, and professionals across diverse industries. These courses are in four categories: video lectures, downloadable/printable reading materials, self-assessment tests, and an online discussion forum for addressing queries. The platform aims to enhance the learning experience through the integration of audio-video content and advanced pedagogy/technology. SWAYAM offers more than 3000 courses including major domain areas such as Science, Social Sciences, Humanities, Mathematics, Computer Science etc. As stated, the SWAYAM Plus Portal will host industry-relevant courses too.

What are the benefits of the SWAYAM Plus portal?

SWAYAM courses are accessible by anyone, anywhere, at any time, breaking down barriers to education. The courses ensure high-quality instruction and content delivery. Courses on SWAYAM are interactive, incorporating video lectures, downloadable reading materials, self-assessment tests, and online discussion forums. These aim to enhance the learning experience and engagement for users. SWAYAM courses are available free of cost, making high-quality education accessible to all, regardless of financial constraints. Those seeking certification can opt for proctored exams for a nominal fee, further validating their learning achievements.

MOOCs and the Democratization of Education in India

MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) play a crucial role in transforming education in India by democratizing access to learning opportunities. These platforms offer flexible and affordable avenues for individuals to acquire new skills and pursue lifelong learning. Especially in India, where traditional educational infrastructure may be limited, MOOCs bridge the gap by providing high-quality courses from top institutions. Moreover, MOOCs cater to diverse learning preferences and needs, empowering learners to personalize their educational journey. By expanding access to education and fostering skill development, MOOCs contribute significantly to India’s educational landscape. The SWAYAM Plus portal will go a long way in achieving these objectives.
