pc free smart class set up in schools of haryana

Under the partnership with Sambhavna NGO, iDream Education had set up a PC Free Smart Class, a version of iPrep Digital Class, in Government Schools across 9 regions of Haryana. But there is a lot that happened before implementing it. Stay with us to know our journey of integrating smart classes set up in schools of Haryana.

Teacher’s response before integrating digital class

From the discussion with teachers of all nine schools before implementing smart class setup, we identified that more than 90 % of teachers only know how to use TV  and smartphones in the name of technology. And when our team noticed that some schools had computers but were kept like scrap, and when asked, teachers said,

“…Computers are good but very hard to operate, some days it takes half of our class time to start it and help students to operate it. On some days, either of the hardware components is not working, which disrupts our entire teaching routine; therefore, we prefer teaching through boards and books…”.

By this time, we knew that the most common problem in all nine schools was the technological resistance of teachers, which limits the use of technology in schools. Therefore, our objective was to make iPrep Digital Class a natural adoption that aligns with the psychology of using the TV in their homes.

Even though teachers are not tech friendly and resist using technology, we successfully integrated the use of PC Free Smart Class amongst the teachers. All this was possible because of its easy functionality. It is nothing alien and is easily accessible through the remote, just like the TV in our homes. It is just one screen that requires to be switched on, and with Pendrive plugged in, teachers are good to teach through it.

Impact of the implementation as a whole

  • Increased productivity of teachers

Because PC Free Smart is used just like TV, teachers made it a part of their regular teaching routine. Further, because they were able to match the content of smart class with their textbooks, it took them no extra effort to change their teaching style; instead, it became very easy for them to demonstrate concepts through it.

  • Increase in students attendance

Learning from videos and visuals increased students’ interest in learning, resulting in increased attendance. Further, they do not just memorise what is being taught but think and evaluate, resulting in curiosity to know more in classroom sessions.

Interesting insights from the implementation

The surprising incident from the training was the interaction of teachers with a smart class setup.

They, one by one, started coming forward and shared the challenges we solved; one teacher talked about the Hindi display in the smart class. She said,

“… from instructions, to category buttons, and to content all in Hindi. Perfect! I think it will be now very easy for me to navigate through it…”

However, one talked about the science experiments given in the form of animated academic video lessons and project videos. He said,

“… Does this have laboratory experiments of chemistry. Yes, it does. Great! I will suggest you guys place one in my lab so that it would be easy for me to guide students through video where simultaneously they can perform the same…”. We then placed one smart class setup in their chemistry lab for their easy and enjoyable experimentation.

Hence, through the easy navigating option, curriculum-aligned digital content and easy-to-use setup, we successfully integrated a digital teaching solution in schools of Haryana.
