Middle Stage (3 Years)

During this three-year phase, the emphasis is on delving deeper into the subject matter for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. The Middle Stage will focus on helping students explore subjects in greater detail, thereby enabling critical thinking. Furthermore, the Middle Stage is dedicated to introducing project-based learning to help students gain hands-on experience.

Secondary Stage (4 Years)

In the final four years of school, from grades 9 to 12, students get ready for their future. Some for higher education or vocational paths. Therefore, during this stage, when students can choose what they want to study, the focus will be on holistic development. This will help them gain real-world skills and competencies.

The beginning of Gurpreet’s Journey

Gurpreet’s journey from a remote village in the Daund district of Pune, Maharashtra, has been marked by determination and resilience. Hailing from a middle-class family, where her father is a farmworker, while her mother dedicated herself to homemaking. Gurpreet’s early education took place in the town of Malegaon, where she navigated the first eight years of her schooling. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, their lives took a significant turn. Her father secured a job at the Daund MIDC, prompting the family’s migration from Malegaon to Daund.

The transition wasn’t easy, especially for Gurpreet 

In Malegaon, she had been accustomed to learning in both Hindi and English mediums. But in Daund, the predominant medium of instruction was Marathi, which was foreign to her. Initially, she struggled to grasp concepts and communicate effectively in this new language. Determined not to fall behind, Gurpreet embarked on a journey of self-study. She by herself used to translate her learning materials from Marathi to English and worked tirelessly to catch up with her classmates.

Hope arrived for Gurpreet when the Shree Bhairvnath Madhyamik Vidyalaya introduced a digital education initiative in collaboration with the CIPLA Foundation. Shreya Namdev Girme, a Class 10th student from the small town of Daund Tehsil in Pune, Maharashtra, embarked on a journey of determination and self-improvement through personalized learning. Despite facing societal norms and a challenging two-year gap from school due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Shreya’s determination to learn led her to not only bridge the learning gap but also achieve the remarkable feat of topping her class in the Pune District.

Challenges Faced During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Shreya is from an orthodox family with traditional beliefs that did not prioritize girls’ education. Despite these challenges, she attended school regularly. However, when the Covid-19 pandemic struck, Shreya’s world changed. The lockdown compelled her to engage more in household chores, disrupting her academic journey all over again.

Determination Amidst Adversity

Refusing to let the pandemic obstruct her educational journey, Shreya turned to digital resources. She started watching YouTube videos on her father’s phone, to supplement her learning. When schools resumed, Shreya managed to convince her parents to allow her to go back to school again. In 2021, the Cipla Foundation collaborated with iDream Education to bridge COVID-19-induced learning gaps in rural areas. This collaborative effort spanned across 55 schools located in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh. 

  • Under this initiative, iPrep tablets were distributed, each equipped with an SD Card preloaded with curriculum-aligned digital content available in Marathi, Kannada, Hindi, and English mediums.
  • Moreover, special attention was given to students in grade 10, ensuring they had access to content from the previous academic year (grade 9) to bridge learning gaps promptly. In 2021, Samsung collaborated with iDream Education to introduce tablet-based education in 292 schools located in Karnataka. This collaborative effort aimed to personalize the learning experience for over 15,000 students by implementing the iPrep Digital Library, consisting of 20 tablets per school, commonly known as the smart ICT Lab. 

  • The educational content is tailored for students in grades K-12. K-12 learning material is aligned with the Karnataka Board of Education and is provided in Kannada Medium. This ensures a familiar learning environment for both students and teachers. 
  • Beyond academic content, the students were also given access to interactive lessons and access to a digital book library. It also included life skills content, fostering the holistic growth of students. 
  • This digital library facilitated the seamless integration of ICT labs into all schools and significantly reduced reliance on electricity and the Internet. It is thereby addressing the infrastructure challenges of many of them.
  • Teachers follow the Digital Library Timetable, utilizing personalized devices within the school’s hall or lab to engage students with the digital content of different classes. This non-judgmental learning environment encouraged collaborative learning among students.

Over 7000 girls residing in remote districts of Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Madhya Pradesh (MP) are using iPrep App. Unfortunately, only a small fraction of these girls are currently enrolled in school, as most of them are denied the opportunity due to societal norms. But, these girls are now able to learn from the comfort of their homes through iPrep. We designed iPrep based on Universal Design Principles, making it easy to use; as a result, these girls are effortlessly engage in daily learning. The usage reports on the app’s Reporting dashboard showed that, on average, the girls spent 175 minutes per month on the platform, and over 80% of the girls used iPrep daily, enabling them to access educational content anytime, anywhere.
