Why is YUVA 2.0 important?

The First edition of YUVA witnessed large-scale participation from young and aspiring authors in English and 22 different Indian languages. Therefore, launch of YUVA 2.0 Scheme is in alignment with PM’s vision to motivate the Indian youth to take up writing books and authoring as a powerful means of expression. Further, YUVA 2.0 is a part of the India@75 Project (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav) initiative. All that, to bring forward the perspectives of young Indian writers on the theme ‘Democracy’.

A senior Ministry official said,

YUVA 2.0 scheme will help develop a stream of writers who can write on a range of subjects to promote Indian culture, heritage, and knowledge system.”

Who will be implementing YUVA 2.0 Scheme?

National Book Trust (NBT), India, under the Ministry of Education, is the implementing Agency of the YUVA 2.0 Scheme. Further, the trust will ensure phase-wise execution of the Prime Minister’s Mentoring Scheme under well-defined stages of mentorship.

How does iDream Education contribute to this mission of promoting reading and writing amongst young students?

We believe Indian youth is waiting to be harnessed for capacity and nation-building. With the vision of the mentor YUVA scheme, iDream Education believes in promoting reading by giving free access to digital books in Hindi, English, and other Indian languages to reach the last mile learner. Best of Online and Offline Education in a Modern World

Co-existence of online and offline education

Amid the Pandemic, online and offline education has marked its place in the education sector. The ease of online education has been a game-changing revolution for the students who continued learning in online classes. Similarly, offline education proved to be instrumental in improving the education infrastructure of rural India.

As online education is maturing, we have started thinking if it can replace the offline education

Aren’t we thinking way ahead?

Education has to be looked at as a 360-degree process to make learning & growth a wholesome experience for the students. Considering education as the overall development of students, we can not limit it to online or offline. Therefore, if online education integrates technology, reach, access, affordability, and convenience, it lacks the personal touch of teachers. Interaction of students with teachers, friends, and other school staff allows them to develop soft skills essential for personality development. Through offline education, students learn empathy, public interaction, gender sensitivity, teamwork, discipline, and integrity because they are surrounded by diverse types of people.

To be wise in the digital era, it is important for us to depend on online education, but offline education should also remain in existence. What we feel, therefore, will emerge are hybrid and blended models of teaching and learning. These two comprehensive frameworks combine the best of online and offline education.

Let us first learn the difference between hybrid and blended learning.

Hybrid learning is the implementation of structured classroom lessons to teach online and in-person simultaneously. Whereas, Blended learning combines a touch of in-person teaching with digital learning content, whether online or offline education.

Advantages of hybrid and blended learning models

Hybrid learning Blended learning
Personalised learning environment that empowers students to learn at their own paceA safe personalised learning environment that empowers students to learn at their own pace because the learning content can be predefined.
The availability of a range of online content increases the search intent of students, where they invest time in researching and studying.Availability of offline digital content on one platform saves their time in research, resulting in increased learning opportunities for students.
Flip classroom learning to virtual learning where students can sit and learn at home from online content with online teacher guidance.Flip classroom learning with a mix of textbooks and offline digital content helps teachers better understand the concepts taught.
Students are empowered to take charge of their learning because concepts missed in classroom learning can be learned again through online platforms.Students are empowered to take charge of their learning because concepts missed in classroom learning can be learned again through offline video lessons, reducing the learning gap.
Decreased efforts of teachers because students start learning on their own through online content available on a range of platforms.Efficient use of teacher’s time because in-person teaching consumes more time of teachers to explain in comparison to a visual demonstration of the same content

All of the above is, however, possible only when we are able to strengthen home-school learning. At home, the student has free space to explore digital content of their choice, and at the same time, teachers can keep track of students learning.

Can hybrid and blended learning models strengthen home school learning?

Covid has made all of us realise the importance of personalised learning at home under the guidance of teachers. During the lockdown, parents and teachers have seen student’s increased engagement in learning because they got a free, non-judgemental environment to learn. From this, it is evident that when at home, students learn what they want and at their pace. The availability of multiple categories of digital learning content makes learning fun at home.

The key, however, is not to talk specifically about school or home, as these are two separate ecosystems. But through education technology, our focus is on bringing them together on one platform to make learning accessible for all.

Let’s look at how we helped students continue their online learning during Covid

When Covid first struck, several of our government school teachers called us to understand how we could support them to maintain continuity in student’s learning. In response to these calls, we launched the iDream Learning App, a free mobile app. The app has all the curriculum-aligned digital content in Hindi, English and local languages. To make the app reach a large number of students, we collaborated with various NGOs and schools with whom we had already worked. Through them, we made the app reach thousands of students. They happily downloaded the app on their parent’s smartphones and continued their learning on one platform from home. Many of them officially adopted the application, and it was also adopted by the Department of Education, Government of Leh.

Students learning at home through offline digital content on tablets during Covid

What happened next?

Very soon, a big concern started to emerge. In several NGO and CSR forums, there was discussion about how digital learning would reach students who do not have access to their own devices and live in regions that have poor internet connectivity.

We at iDream Education emphasise on enabling equity in education. Therefore, we designed our solutions keeping in mind the needs of students sitting in the remotest region of India.

In this situation, we collaborated with project officials and coordinators of many NGOs and foundations and provided students iPrep tablets. The educational tablets were given with a pre-installed iPrep learning app and preloaded curriculum-aligned digital content on SD cards. Through this, students continued learning from the app without connecting it to the internet. The app empowered students to track their learning in progress through usage reports which get saved on their tablets. The reports are also synced to an online reporting dashboard whenever the device connects to the internet.

By combining OFFLINE-ONLINE, we were able to bring together the best of both worlds.

We strongly believe that as our schools return to the new normal, we will see the increased adoption of the hybrid learning model to achieve the best outcomes. Therefore, our focus should also be on students who do not have smartphones and internet connectivity at home.

What Does Personalised Learning Mean for Students?

Education in today’s world is considered a democratic right of every child. Enabling quality education is the 17th global goal in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. So, how far are we to achieve this? And what are we doing to enable a personalised learning experience for last-mile learners?

Personalised Learning: A way to Quality Education

Personalised learning puts children at the heart of the learning by empowering them to learn at their own pace. It enables a non-judgemental familiar environment to learn based on their learning abilities and gaps.

Personalised learning harness students’ different learning interests, resulting in increased engagement. With increased engagement, students tend to spend more time learning. And at the same time, if given access to enjoyable learning content, they don’t just memorise concepts but think, analyse and absorb, resulting in improved understanding and results.

Using Technology to establish a personalised learning environment

Technology has been playing a key role in addressing the diverse learning needs of students. Most students use digital tools to search and process information that demonstrates an understanding of concepts in their preferred way.

Online practice tests, mock tests, and sample papers are examples of how technology has started enabling a personalised non-judgemental learning environment for students. Another example of a personalised learning model is digital content available on youtube and other similar platforms.  It allows students to learn enjoyably where they play content repeatedly until they are confident. Technology in education has empowered students to learn from diverse content but is it really helping them cope with their learning gap?

No, because some students struggle to find the content in one place, leading to distraction. Students of remote regions of India still struggle with poor internet connectivity, inability to derive their interests, unable to find content in their preferred language, and so much more.

So, How do we add value to personalised learning using technology?

  • For students who are at risk of dropping out of school

Every year, a large number of students across India drop out of school, resulting in a decrease in the literacy rate. Some common causes determined by the National statistical survey are:

Percentage distribution of school dropouts in India
Reasons for increasing the risk of dropping out of school

The survey shows that lack of interest, economic condition, and involvement in domestic work, especially for girls, are the core reasons for increasing dropouts. Therefore, our prime focus is on personalising learning to increase student engagement. Learning that empowers students to learn based on their interest levels. Thus, to increase student interest in learning, we enable a diverse range of enjoyable learning content in the form of animated video lessons, digital books, and so much more. Further, we also give students free environment to switch to junior class content, learn unlimited and fill learning gaps

  • For students who struggle with Life-long learning gaps

Life-long learning gaps occur when students skip classes, miss going to school, hesitate to ask doubts, etc. In these situations, they get promoted to the senior class based on their aggregate. But, they still lack an understanding of the concepts and topics taught in junior classes. Therefore, filling the lifelong learning gap is every student’s need. It boosts their motivation to learn by improving their overall understanding by getting them age-appropriate learning levels.

To help students cope with the lifelong learning gaps, we give them access to enjoyable learning content of all classes in their preferred language. All this to empower them to learn based on their learning level and understanding. This way, we establish a non-judgemental environment where students learn freely at their own pace.

  • For students who suffer learning gaps due Covid induced lockdown

Closures of schools is the biggest reason behind the lost interest of students in studies. As per the surveys, it is evident that less than 8% of children from rural India attended online classes during the lockdown. The gap was specifically for students in remote regions. Therefore, a few months now, the state governments started promoting digital content by distributing digital resources. But, some areas still remain untouched, whereas some struggle to find relevant learning content, internet connectivity, and much more. We at iDream Education reduce dependency on the internet by giving access to multimedia content preloaded on SD Cards. Further, we aim to fill learning gaps by giving them access to the content of junior classes so they can switch and learn at their own pace.

How have we started establishing a personalised learning environment?

  • To reduce the risk of dropout

One prominent reason behind dropouts is the learning gap for example, learning gap in the children of migrant workers whose parents take them to their place of work. All these children are the most affected & are denied access to quality education, health, and proper nutrition all their life. While working with these groups of children, their teachers shared many stories. Like, how children of migrant workers go through emotional turmoil and continuous changes in their life. Because of moving from one to another, they withdraw from school at the stage of getting comfortable with space and the learning cycle. The relocation of these children either results in a learning gap or a loss of interest in studies.

To help these children catch up with age-appropriate learning levels, we, with the support of NGOs, have provided them iPrep tablets. Each education tablet is given preloaded with digital content on SD cards for all classes in Hindi and English Medium. With personalise learning tablets, they could change their classes anytime to learn from junior class content. They could learn based on their learning levels in a non-judgemental environment. This way, we have seen students cope with the learning gap and also show increased interests in learning. While some of them enrolled back in schools and are continuing their education

  • To cope with life long learning gap

Students in remote areas of India are not involved in regular learning. This is one prime reason behind their increasing learning gap. Therefore, to help these children cover their learning gaps in a non-judgemental environment, we, with the support of various state governments, NGOs, and CSR partners, enable enjoyable digital content on tablets for all classes and in students preferred language. Learning content on iPrep tablets is given in where students can switch to the content of junior classes & learn what they missed for years.

  • To bridge the digital divide

From the discussion with principals, teachers, and coordinators of government schools and NGOs, we found out that when students returned after COVID, teachers noticed the difference in students’ confidence and learning. Some students struggled with several months of the academic gap, which varied for all students. At the same time, it was difficult for teachers to identify learning gaps in individual student’s and then work on it.

To solve this, we, in partnership with government schools and NGOs, provided students personalised iPrep tablets. Each educational tablet is given with preloaded offline digital content for their classes and one junior class. For example, in some schools, students were given access to the content of classes 9th and 10th. All this is to give class 10th students a chance to cover the gap of class 9th before their board exams. Consequently, we saw students of class 10 watching video lessons from class 9th to cover their gaps

Personalised learning environment has the heart of every child. It allows them to learn at their own pace without being judged. We believe

“Education Technology has the power to personalise learning for every student.”

Encouraging Bilingual Approach in Teaching and Learning

Bilingual Education in India
bilingual classrooms
idream education

Bilingualism in the Classroom allows us to gain proficiency in speaking more than one language. It helps us stay aligned with our cultural identity and brings value to our social interactions. The benefits of bilingual education in India include academic advantage, self-confidence, and increased self-esteem.

But what about classroom teaching where proficiency in English or Hindi language is linked with students’ academic success? Is there any way teachers can harness Bilingualism in their teaching to help students learn in their preferred language?

As per National Education Policy, 2020, the “medium of instruction till at least Class 5, but preferably till Class 8 and beyond, will be regional language of students”. Further, on Mother Language Day 2022, PM Narendra Modi Ji said, “Education in mother tongue is linked to mental growth & development of Children.”

The continuous stress of education in the mother tongue, especially in the early years at school, is because children grow up in an environment where only the local language is spoken in their homes and in their schools.

Language is a Resource

Bilingual classrooms are the need of the hour for the comprehensive development of children from an early age. Teaching and learning in a regional language improve conceptual understanding and establish a better connection between school and home learning. Even when people use digital, they look for natural comfort, which is in their local language. Therefore, in the continuous innovation in our education technology, we have been focusing on eliminating language barriers that limit student’s learning and understanding. Our purpose is to enhance digital learning and teaching by enabling content in regional languages with Hindi or English. Our focus is to make children naturally adapt & fall in love with digital learning by giving them a familiar environment for learning.

idream education, Bilingual education in India
Multiple Categories of enjoyable digital content in Hindi, English, and other Local Languages

Is learning in a regional language significant for educational success?

Yes, regional language for students is more than just language. It is their cultural, social, and personal identity.

  • Students enter school at an appropriate age, attend regularly, and are at less risk of dropping out when learning in their own language.
  • Students learn faster and enjoy school more when taught in the local language.
  • It is easier for students to understand the curriculum when they learn in their mother tongue.
  • It is easier for students to retain content when they study in their preferred language. When learning in a language they are familiar with, they think critically and rationalize what they are learning.

Thus, we believe teaching in the mother tongue in the classroom validates students’ identity. It further enables a strong foundation for learning, resulting in educational success. Therefore, we focus on providing all the digital content in student preferred language. Additionally, the interface of our digital learning solutions are also designed to support bilingual education in India. All the navigation options and content categories across our platforms are given in the preferred local language making digital learning easy and comfortable.

Value of Encouraging Bilingual Education in India

  • Students learn more when taught in their regional languages

When students learn in their preferred language, they understand concepts better because of the clarity of expression. They tend to involve in learning more because they are able to better analyse, reason and think about the topics taught. Further, better clarity of concepts helps them cope with their historical learning gaps. Because when taught in a regional language, they understand better, grasp fast, and are able to retain concepts for a longer time.

  • Bilingual education tends to create classrooms more engaging than ever

Teaching in the local language motivates students to learn & they don’t hesitate to come up with their doubts. It further enables classroom interaction, resulting in better clarity of concepts. Similarly, when students learn in a regional language, they grasp concepts fast, resulting in increased classroom interaction.

One of the best examples is government school teachers. The ones who, regardless of the availability of books in Hindi and English, prefer to teach in the local language. As per them, students are able to connect and understand concepts better when learning in the local language. And it further strengthens connections between school and home.

Our Discussion with the School Students and Teachers

idream education, Bilingual education in India

From our proactive communication with students and teachers of schools of Maharashtra, Bengal, and many more states who have been learning from digital content in regional languages. We found out that using a language students are most comfortable with, especially in the early years, improves attendance, increases classroom participation, and reduces dropouts and grade repetition.

We at iDream Education encourage students and teachers to learn and teach in their preferred language to help them naturally adapt to digital learning. Through this, we have successfully enabled a familiar environment for learning, for many students across Indian States.

Advancing Girls’ Education through Tablet Based Learning

ICT lab in residential schools of rajasthan

Meeting girls from the residential schools of Rajsthan was an inspiring experience for all of us. We came across many facts that we tend to ignore in the glare of city lights. Rajasthan, the 7th largest state in India, recorded the lowest literacy rate for women, only 46 % in 2018. With the increasing need for education, the literacy rate has improved. But still, many researches show that 37% of educated women had dropped out of school before completing 8th grade. Therefore, to provide quality education and better learning opportunities to the girls in the Bhiwadi district of Rajasthan. Union Government has set up Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya residential schools for girls of weaker sections.

Our journey of meeting these girls from residential schools in Rajasthan

Foundation Saint Gobain is an arm of Saint Gobain that designs, manufactures, and markets solar control glass, fire-resistant glass, and other various types of float glasses in India. From the proactive communication of project coordinators of Foundation Saint Gobain with teachers and students of schools. They found out that girls in residential schools struggle to understand practical concepts. They even ask their teachers to play videos of the content they teach to understand concepts better. This is when their team reached out to us to enable enjoyable learning content with the motto of making learning engaging and building a conceptual understanding of the topics taught.

Under this partnership, our team first conducted a need assessment survey based on the issues identified by Saint Gobain. We, in partnership with Sain Gobain Foundation, implemented iPrep Digital Library, a tablet based smart ICT lab in residential schools of Rajasthan. It is known as TabLab as it is a tablet charging trolley & storage rack setup with a tablet that can be used on a rotational basis by students.

Objective of implementing tablet based learning

To make learning enjoyable, easy, and engaging for students.

Girls learning from  animated educational videos
Enjoyable learning experience through animated educational videos

Project Components

  • In TabLab, we provided them with 20, 7inch Android tablets. Earphones and a book-style protective cover were also given with each tablet to make learning hassle free.
  • The tablets were preloaded with Hindi digital content on SD cards. Further, all the content for classes 5th to 8th of all subjects was in alignment with Rajsthan Board. All of this, to make the adoption of digital content easy and natural.
  • DIY and other activity videos for practical learning. Further, to make learning holistic we also enable access to books on health, safety, sanitation, inspirational biographies, and much more.
  • Assessment and MCQ style practice questions to boost the confidence of girls on topics learned.
  • Reporting dashboard for continuous monitoring of learning in progress. Through this, teachers, principals, and project partners can determine how effectively girls are using tablets for learning.

Project Impact

  • Improved creative learning

When students got access to tablets and digital content they had wanted for a long time, they explored it to their maximum capacity. In a month, they explored most educational and activity videos to know the practicality of what they have been taught in the last few years. Additionally, all of them participated in activity day and prepared their own working models.

  • Some developed a reading habit

Because of the availability of digital books on inspirational biographies, poems, stories, safety, sanitation, and much more, girls from the residential school of Bhiwadi developed a reading habit. One such girl from the school is Nisha, who we haven’t personally met, but while we were reviewing usage reports, we found out that between multimedia and digital books, Nisha has spent a staggering 63% of the time reading digital books. Before this, she did not have access to books, and her interest would have waned off, but with the availability of digital books on tablets, she is now exploring her potential to the fullest.

Tablet Usage data of Nisha
  • Better Result

Because students now had access to all the types of content they were looking for, their involvement in learning increased. Moreover, girls started staying back in classes, learning from the content of junior classes. This improved their understanding of concepts they missed in previous years, resulting in an improved understanding of students and better results.

As per the recent national survey of 2020 conducted by the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Development (CTLD), BML Munjal University, indicated that more than 34% of teachers found online teaching tough, as they were not tech-friendly and 32% were unable to make out what was happening at the student’s end like whether students are paying attention to classroom teaching or not.  Further, some teachers also mentioned that they miss the warmth and personal interaction with students. Therefore, they are keen to get back to “normal” teaching as soon as possible. But in today’s education system, a blend of technology in a traditional classroom setting has become significant in making learning and teaching interactive and interesting. Thus, teachers have to become tech-friendly.

So, as a part of the learning ecosystem, we have simplified the smart class hardware by making it all about “One Screen, that is iPrep Digital Class”, just like the TV in our homes. It has eliminated infrastructural and psychological barriers limiting technology use in the school.

PC Free Smart Class setup Simplifying digital teaching

PC free Smart class is just one screen that requires a maximum half an hour to set up. It can be set up on any wall with one stand and 4 screws. When we go for setting up PC Free Smart Class in schools, we have always noticed some level of curiosity in government school teachers like, “How simple is it to set up this device?” and “Will it be this easy to use also?” They willingly ask us about its content and features and also access it on their own through the remote, just like they access TV in their homes. During these times, we learned that with infrastructural barriers, we have also been able to cope with psychological barriers that limit the use of Smart Classes.

What psychological barrier have we eliminated with PC Free Smart Class?

Let’s go back to the times of our parents to understand the natural psychology of adoption

When I talk to my parents about life in their times, they say, “…in our times we only had newspapers, radio, and books and television were evolving, where we had only one TV commonly used by all the people in a home …” Without any training the generations got comfortable with advanced devices which now have become an integral part of their lives.

In alignment with the comfort of teachers with TV in their homes, we have simplified conventional smart classroom setup with versions of iPrep Digital Class. With this, we eliminated the need for all its complex components like CPU, projector, Keyboard, and mouse. iPrep Digital Class is one screen that can be accessed through a remote/touch. Further, all the content is made available offline on Pendrive, where teachers just need to plug the Pendrive, choose necessary categories, and are good to teach.

Incidents that pushed us to relate iPrep Digital Class with TV in our homes

After the training of smart class setup in school supported by Sambhavana NGO, one of the teachers took the remote from our team member and said

“…Oh, it’s just like the TV in my home. The navigating options are very simple, just like changing channels. This is easy and not like what I thought. When I heard of smart class, I thought this would be another add-on to school infrastructure. We teachers won’t be able to teach through this, but now I am confident of using it ….”

-Said one of the teachers

A similar thing happened in another implementation supported by End Poverty. Here, we implemented iPrep Digital Class through an interactive flat panel display. IFDP digital Classes can be accessed through touch, resulting in high teacher involvement. When we were showing them the way to use it, one teacher came forward and said:

“… Let me do it. I will change the language. Ok! Now I have to choose the class and subject. Arey Wah! It’s very simple; oh we have video lessons too….

The overwhelming response and curiosity of the teachers left us awestruck. We felt pleased when teachers liked it, used it, and admired it.

Why do we think iPrep Digital Class, a PC Free Smart Classroom solution is easy to use for teachers?

iPrep Digital Class, a smart classroom solution can be set up on any hardware Android TV, interactive flat panel, and on all operating systems, that is, Windows, Linux, or Android. Smart TV/ Interactive flat panels for schools are some examples of it that are designed to help teachers manage their classes easily. It just requires Plug and Play to start classroom sessions just like we switch on the TV in our homes. iPrep Digital Class is easy to use for teachers because:

Simplified hardware:

We have simplified the hardware by reducing its components to one screen. It can be set up in any school, on any classroom wall in just half-hour with one stand & 4 screws. Moreover, it is nothing alien and is designed keeping in mind the technological friendliness of teachers with TV in their homes.

Aligns with teaching pedagogy:

The syllabus books and animated video lessons on iPrep are just like textbooks. Further, iPrep Digital Class makes teaching became more simple by integrating the Learning Management System. The LMS comprises a list of all teaching materials aligned to textbooks so that teachers can easily adapt to digital content

Multilingual platform:

We enable content in Hindi, English, and other regional languages like Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, and Oriya. All this because we believe that the availability of navigating options in teachers’ preferred language makes smart class setup easy to use. Further, we have seen easy user interfaces motivate teachers to use a smart class on a daily basis.

Engaging classroom content:

To suit the different learning abilities of different students, we enable multiple categories of digital content. The content is in the form of animated educational videos that make comprehension of concepts simpler. Further, iPrep offers syllabus books to refer to anytime, and notes for quick revision. Teachers also get access to content beyond academics such as life skills, DIY videos, climate action course, and more for the holistic growth of students. Additionally, we give access to inspirational stories, poems, and biographies for the holistic growth of students. Lastly, we give MCQ style Practice questions for an interactive classroom experience.

Availability of monthly reports:

To ensure regular usage of iPrep Digital Classroom, we share monthly usage reports with the principal.  This helps them keep track of their teachers’ involvement in digital content.

Integration of iPrep Digital Class in Schools of Haryana

pc free smart class set up in schools of haryana

Under the partnership with Sambhavna NGO, iDream Education had set up a PC Free Smart Class, a version of iPrep Digital Class, in Government Schools across 9 regions of Haryana. But there is a lot that happened before implementing it. Stay with us to know our journey of integrating smart classes set up in schools of Haryana.

Teacher’s response before integrating digital class

From the discussion with teachers of all nine schools before implementing smart class setup, we identified that more than 90 % of teachers only know how to use TV  and smartphones in the name of technology. And when our team noticed that some schools had computers but were kept like scrap, and when asked, teachers said,

“…Computers are good but very hard to operate, some days it takes half of our class time to start it and help students to operate it. On some days, either of the hardware components is not working, which disrupts our entire teaching routine; therefore, we prefer teaching through boards and books…”.

By this time, we knew that the most common problem in all nine schools was the technological resistance of teachers, which limits the use of technology in schools. Therefore, our objective was to make iPrep Digital Class a natural adoption that aligns with the psychology of using the TV in their homes.

Implemented PC Free Smart Class set up in Government schools of Haryana

Even though teachers are not tech friendly and resist using technology, we successfully integrated the use of PC Free Smart Class amongst the teachers. All this was possible because of its easy functionality. It is nothing alien and is easily accessible through the remote, just like the TV in our homes. It is just one screen that requires to be switched on, and with Pendrive plugged in, teachers are good to teach through it.

What do teachers have in their smart class setup?

What do teachers have in their smart class setup

Impact of the implementation as a whole

  • Increased productivity of teachers

Because PC Free Smart is used just like TV, teachers made it a part of their regular teaching routine. Further, because they were able to match the content of smart class with their textbooks, it took them no extra effort to change their teaching style; instead, it became very easy for them to demonstrate concepts through it.

  • Increase in students attendance

Learning from videos and visuals increased students’ interest in learning, resulting in increased attendance. Further, they do not just memorise what is being taught but think and evaluate, resulting in curiosity to know more in classroom sessions.

Interesting insights from the implementation

The surprising incident from the training was the interaction of teachers with a smart class setup.

They, one by one, started coming forward and shared the challenges we solved; one teacher talked about the Hindi display in the smart class. She said,

“… from instructions, to category buttons, and to content all in Hindi. Perfect! I think it will be now very easy for me to navigate through it…”

However, one talked about the science experiments given in the form of animated academic video lessons and project videos. He said,

“… Does this have laboratory experiments of chemistry. Yes, it does. Great! I will suggest you guys place one in my lab so that it would be easy for me to guide students through video where simultaneously they can perform the same…”. We then placed one smart class setup in their chemistry lab for their easy and enjoyable experimentation.

Hence, through the easy navigating option, curriculum-aligned digital content and easy-to-use setup, we successfully integrated a digital teaching solution in schools of Haryana.

Big Leap from Blackboards to Android Projector-Based Smart Classrooms

Smart class in schools of Varanasi

With continuous work with different schools, teachers, and students, the people of Sahbhagi Shikshan Kendra (SSK) NGO are aware of the education situation in Varanasi. Two key issues identified by their team are:

  • Lack of infrastructure
  • Limited teachers in government schools

Further, as per the coordinators of SSK NGO, students of remote areas of Varanasi think “digital education is only for the people of big cities like Delhi & Mumbai.” In response, teachers mentioned that students lack interest in learning and therefore avoid attending school. Furthermore, they continued to say that “because we are only 6 or 7 for 100s of students in the school, we are unable to give attention to individual students.

This is when project heads of SSK NGO reached us with the thought of enabling digital education in 11 Government Schools of Varanasi

Collaboration with iDream Education

Under this partnership, iDream Education set up an iPrep Digital Class through Android Projector in schools of Varanasi. Our aim was to introduce blended learning in their traditional classrooms. But, at the same time, we wanted to make teachers adapt to teaching technology naturally. Therefore, to achieve this, we enabled a Pendrive with all digital content preloaded for offline digital teaching.

Teacher’s training on using Smart Class

Key Components of Implementation

  • To help them adapt to digital content, just like their textbooks. We provided them with digital content aligned to UP Board for all classes from 1 to 8th in Hindi Medium.
  • Further, to make learning engaging and interesting for students. We provided life skills and growth-based videos. This is given to motivate students to put their learning into action.
  • Additionally, we gave them access to books on health, safety, sanitation, inspirational biographies, and much more. All this is for the holistic learning of students.
  • Similarly, to encourage students to involve in classroom discussions. we gave them assessment and MCQ-style topic-wise practice questions.
  • Lastly, reporting dashboard for continuous monitoring of the usage of digital content by teachers in their regular teaching routine.

Smart Classroom setup, a beacon of hope for students and teachers

Implementation of the Smart Classroom setup was a beacon of hope for students that now they could also learn from smart classes like students of private schools.

“…Thank you! Now, I will also be able to learn like people of big cities Bombay, Delhi…”,

said Nitin, a 5th-class student.

Teachers were also happy that now they could give personalized attention to individual students.

Impact of the implementing iPrep Digital Class

Smart Class set-up became a Natural Adoption

Because all the content is available on Pendrive, teachers just turn the device on, teach and turn it off, and because it is accessed through a remote, teachers naturally got comfortable with it and used it just like the TV in their homes.

Increase in the productivity of teachers

From the feedback given by teachers, we learned that the best part of a smart classroom setup to them is displayed in Hindi. They say, “It is very easy for us to navigate, find video lessons and teach through it”. Further, because the content of all the subjects for all classes is also in Hindi, teachers have made smart classrooms a regular part of their teaching routine.

Increase in student-teacher engagement

As all the digital content given to them is aligned with UP Board, they did not have to put any extra effort into switching to digital. When they saw animated educational videos and digital books exactly what was given in their textbooks, their interest in digital content increased. From the discussion with teachers after a month, our team figured out the key driving factors of increased engagement of students in learning are video lessons, activity videos, and practice questions. Teachers say,

It has become easy for us to make them understand complex concepts which used to consume our most time”.

This way smart class set-up not only increased student-teacher engagement but also reduced absenteeism. As a result, in very little time, they got comfortable with the smart class and are using the smart class setup in their regular teaching routine.
